The relationship between health worker and patient has an important part to play in encouraging healthy behaviors. This relationship is affected by a number of factors including communication. A poor relationship between health worker and patient can lead to poor levels of adherence to treatment programs. To be able to communicate effectively with others is at the heart of all patient care, for if the health practitioner cannot identify problems accurately, care will be based on assumptions rather than on the expressed needs of the individual. Communication, therefore needs to be effective so that care can be planned on the basis of the patient’s actual problems, rather than on what we think are

his/her problems.

Aim: To   provide the   students with an   understanding of   the factors with influence effectivecommunication between a doctor and a patient and to promote sensitivity to ethical and cultural issues in communication.
